PROJECT KALKI - an intro
Like anywhere in the world, the transsexual people of India suffer because of poverty and lack of livelihood opportunities. Our gender identity is seen as a taboo. This had deeply affected the transgender community resulting in lack of education, no opportunities for skill development or pursuing a decent job.Project Kalki is one of the solutions for this problem. Envisioned by transgender rights activist and actor Kalki Subramaniam, who holds a Master's degree in Journalism and Mass Communication, Project Kalki provides training in various media related jobs including working in the movies, internet media and print media.
Our focus in on young destitute transsexual women. Kalki along with experts and students from the media organizations and schools volunteer their time graciously to provide training to these women on different skill sets. The training includes the following:
- Acting in films and theatre
- Working as technicians in films/direction, camera,
production, editing
- Voice rendering/dubbing
- Community Journalism
- Documentary film making
- Blogging/Web expertise/Internet media
- Writing/Reporting
- Podcasting/Running radio shows
More
than just learning, it is the 'hands on experience' which
moulds
them as experts and specialists in different media skills.
